PrideFest Safety
At Capital City Pride, the safety of every guest is our top priority. Each year, we work closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure PrideFest is a safe and welcoming experience for all. Here’s how you can help us make that happen:
Stay Informed with Text Alerts
Sign up for PrideFest alerts through Alert Iowa by texting “PRIDE” to 67283. You’ll receive real-time updates about weather, traffic, and emergency notifications. Note: You must re-subscribe each year, even if you’ve signed up before. (See infographic below for more details.)
Be Prepared for Weather
Severe weather is the most common safety concern at outdoor events like PrideFest. If storms are in the forecast, have a plan in place. The East Village offers nearby shelters like bars, stores, parking garages, and other buildings where you can take cover. The National Weather Service works closely with our leadership team to provide advance notice, giving us time to communicate with attendees and guide everyone to safety if needed.
Security & Emergency Response
Capital City Pride collaborates year-round with the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, Iowa National Guard, Polk County Emergency Management, Des Moines Fire and Police Departments, private security firms, and first aid providers. Together, we’ve developed and refined comprehensive safety plans through monthly meetings and ongoing coordination.
If you are approached by a first responder, security team member, or PrideFest staff during the event, please follow their instructions—they are working to ensure everyone’s safety. If you witness anything concerning or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of the Capital City Pride Team or any uniformed official.
Together, we can make PrideFest a safe, joyful celebration for all.
